Fourth seed Robbie Green beat 2013 semi-finalist Richie George 3-0 to reach the last 16 at the BDO World Darts Championship.
George, the son of two-time Lakeside runner-up Bobby George, won the opening leg of the match but Green took the next six legs, including a 10-darter, to build up a 2-0 sets lead.
Green took the opening leg of the third set before George hit back to level it.
But Green won the next two legs to set up a meeting with Gary Robson.
The Northumberland player hit two ton-plus checkouts in the final set to claim a 3-2 win against Ron Meulenkamp of the Netherlands.
"This is the one we want," Green told BBC Sport. "It's no good winning [throughout the year] and then coming here and flopping in front of the cameras. We have to come here and perform."
Rick Hofstra prevailed from the only other first-round contest of the second day at Frimley Green, whitewashing number nine seed Remco van Eijden in an all-Dutch clash.
Christian Kist , world champion in 2012, will meet second seed James Wilson in round one after narrowly defeating Hiroaki Shimizu of Japan 3-2 in the preliminary round.
The Dutchman, who lost to Green in the first round last year, trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in sets before eventually finding form.
Also in the preliminary round, New Zealand's Mike Day - the oldest debutant in Lakeside history at the age of 58 - went through 3-0 against Sam Head, while American Jim Widmayer beat Garry Thompson 3-2 to book a first-round tie with top seed Stephen Bunting on Tuesday.
In the women's competition, defending champion Anastasia Dobromyslova of Russia had to come from a set down to beat Karin Krappen of the Netherlands 2-1.
Dobromyslova struggled in the first set but regained her composure in the second, taking the set 3-0. Krappen took the opening leg of the third set with a 127 check-out but the Russian, who is looking for her fourth title, took the next three legs to advance.
Teenager Fallon Sherrock from Milton Keynes joined three-time winner Dobromyslova in the quarter-finals after an impressive 2-0 success against Holland's Rilana Erades.
