Actress Ellen Page: 'I am gay'

Actress Ellen Page tells Las Vegas audience she is lesbian

Actress Ellen Page, 14 February 2014 Ellen Page said she had suffered for years

Actress Ellen Page, who starred as a pregnant teenager in Juno in 2006, has declared she is lesbian.

"I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission," she told an audience in Las Vegas on Friday.

The 26-year-old actress said she felt "a personal obligation and a social responsibility" to come out.

She is the latest in a series of high-profile figures in the US to declare their sexuality, including American footballer, Michael Sam.

Page, who was born in Canada, was addressing a conference on teenage homosexuality hosted by the Human Rights Campaign, which lobbies for the rights of those in same-sex relationships.

"I am here today because I am gay," she said, prompting a standing ovation.

Her voice trembling, she said: "I suffered for years because I was scared to be out.

"My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I'm standing here with all of you on the other side of that pain."

Page, who was nominated for an Oscar for Juno, also criticised the "pervasive stereotypes about masculinity and femininity that define how we are all supposed to act, dress and speak".

The actress, who enjoyed central roles in X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006 and the science fiction movie Inception in 2010, is also due to appear later this year in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Preston North End held promotion rivals Leyton Orient to a draw on an afternoon when Deepdale paid tribute to club legend Sir Tom Finney.

Before the match, fans, players and officials observed a minute's silence for the former England winger, who has died at the age of 91.

Preston's players, who wore shirts with Finney's name on the back, went behind when Mathieu Baudry struck.

However, Joe Garner's penalty earned North End a deserved point.

Kevin Davies spurned a glorious late chance to earn a poignant victory for Simon Grayson's men, but the former England and Bolton Wanderers striker could not direct Scott Wiseman's cross on target.

A crowd of 13,440 attended the match, almost 4,000 more than Preston's average for the season, and it created a fine atmosphere and fitting tribute to Finney, one of England's finest ever players.

Before the match, supporters passed around a large banner bearing Finney's face while videos of the one-club player were played on the big screen.

Both captains led their teams out carrying wreaths, which were handed over to Finney's family shortly before an impeccably observed minute's silence.

Orient had the game's best chance when the unmarked Lloyd James forced Declan Rudd into a good save from eight yards out while, at the other end, Garner shot wide after being picked out by Paul Gallagher.

Preston eventually got into their stride and Craig Davies's neat turn and shot was well saved by Eldin Jakupovic midway through the first half and Neil Kilkenny had a long-range strike tipped wide by the goalkeeper.

However, the visitors went into the lead when poor defending allowed the ball to break to Baudry, who rifled home from 10 yards out.

Preston got themselves back into the game after the break when Craig Davies was bundled over in the box and Garner kept his composure to level.

Kevin Davies spurned a great opportunity to take all three points, but it was not to be for the home side.

The result leaves Preston fourth, still five points behind third-placed Leyton Orient.

Troops try to disarm militia in CAR

CAR disarmament drive fails to capture militia leader

A soldier shows amulets and a toy gun the troops found during an operation in the Boy-rabe neighbourhood of Bangui on 15 February Despite finding arms - and here a toy gun - peacekeepers didn't capture Patrice Edouard Ngaissona

French and African peacekeepers have seized weapons from militia in the capital of the Central African Republic, which has been gripped by sectarian strife.

Troops conducted house-to-house searches for several hours in a neighbourhood of Bangui believed to be a base for attacks against Muslims.

Automatic weapons, grenades, knives and ammunition were confiscated.

More than 250 military personnel were deployed in the disarmament drive.

The peacekeepers hope to secure the northern district of Boy Rabe.

It is a base for the anti-balaka militia - formed in response to killings by Muslim rebels and now blamed for their own revenge attacks.

The operation was not entirely successful. Some of the militia refused to disarm and one of its top leaders, Patrice Edouard Ngaissona, escaped capture.

The city's chief prosecutor said Mr Ngaissona was "the big fish who had to be detained", according to AFP news agency.

France is deploying a further 400 troops from Chad and Gabon, after French defence minister Jean-Yves le Drian admitted Paris had underestimated the level of violence and hatred in the Central African Republic.

That raises the total troop deployment of CAR's former colonial power, to 2,000.

The French military, which has been in the country since December, is working alongside 5,500 troops from other African countries.

The United Nations refugee agency has described the situation as "a humanitarian catastrophe of unspeakable proportions".

The UN's World Food Programme says that about 1.3 million people - a quarter of the population - are in need of aid.

France has admitted it underestimated the ethnic hatred in the country

Tens of thousands of Muslims have fled as Christian militias have stepped up their attacks in recent weeks.

The militias claim to be taking revenge for atrocities committed by Muslim rebels last year.

They accuse their victims of supporting the Muslim rebel group that seized power in March 2013, but which was forced out last month.

Many Muslims have crossed the borders into neighbouring Cameroon and Chad, while thousands more are living in camps inside CAR.

CAR is rich in gold, diamonds and other natural resources but decades of unrest and mismanagement have left most of its people stuck in poverty.

FA Cup holders Wigan kept up the defence of their crown by knocking Premier League Cardiff out to move into the last eight.

Chris McCann turned in a low cross to put the Championship side ahead before Fraizer Campbell lashed in a leveller.

Midfielder Ben Watson restored Wigan's lead before half-time with a 25-yard piledriver following a free-kick.

Cardiff's Juan Cala was denied by a post while Craig Noone had a late shot saved as the hosts bowed out.

The home side, who are second-from-bottom in the Premier League, pushed plenty of players forward to try to equalise only for a determined rearguard Latics action to keep them at arm's length for the most part.

Wigan were playing their 42nd match of a season which has included Europa League football on the back of beating Manchester City in last season's FA Cup final, but took another Premier League scalp having beaten Crystal Palace in the last round.

It was the first time the team had played each other in the FA Cup but there was plenty of history between the two managers.

Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played at Manchester United, while his counterpart Uwe Rosler was at rivals Manchester City during their playing days.

Rosler was also caretaker manager at Molde before Solsjkaer became the Norwegian club's full-time manager, and the two friends also met for a chat at a hotel the night before the match.

However, any sentiment was put one side as the visitors began the stronger and were rewarded when they took the lead.

Midfielder Jordi Gomez fired in a low cross for McCann, who did well to deal with the pace of the ball and sidefoot in a left-foot finish.

Cardiff had struggled to impose themselves but were level when winger Wilfried Zaha slipped in the area and, after Wigan failed to clear, Campbell powered in a left-foot strike.

The pattern of the game had seen both teams score against the run of play and that continued when Watson, who scored the winner in last year's final against City, thundered a strike past keeper David Marshall after a free-kick had been rolled into his path.

The goals opened up the game into an absorbing spectacle and Cala looked set to level for Cardiff but his header from a yard hit the post.

McCann almost scooped in an effort for the visitors but that was a rare chance as the second half failed to match the entertainment of the first.

Cardiff rarely threatened to get back on level terms apart from in a frantic finish when Noone cut in from the right and had his shot palmed wide by Wigan keeper Ali Al Habsi.

Storm misery continues in the South

UK storm: Misery continues in the South

Storm demolished Lyme Bay National Coastwatch Institution's lookout The National Coastwatch Institution for Lyme Bay said its Burton Bradstock lookout had been "blown away"

Thousands of homes are without power, many roads have closed and rail services are disrupted after storms battered the South.

Southern Electric Power Distribution (SEPD) said engineers, linesmen and tree cutters were "working to locate and repair damage and restore power".

Several flood warnings remain in place along the River Thames.

It comes after winds of up to 80mph (128km/h) hit the region on Friday and Saturday.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for ice and rain.

SEPD said rural areas, including in Slough, Oxford, Poole and the New Forest, had been affected by power cuts since Friday.

It said power had been restored to about 100,000 homes, but added winds, fallen trees and flooding had made it difficult for engineers to access the damaged areas.

Southeastern Trains has closed several routes due to the storms and First Great Western has advised passengers not to travel.

Services are also disrupted between Banbury and Leamington Spa after a landslip on the rails.

Hampshire Constabulary said its control room received 2,033 calls in 24 hours - twice the daily average - with many reporting fallen trees and flooding.

In Hampshire, a tree fell on to the roof of St Thomas of Canterbury Church in Basingstoke and opened up a number of graves.

Hundreds of trees were also uprooted in Oxfordshire, which sparked a large scale clear-up.

On Friday night, emergency services and the Army rescued 32 people trapped in a beachfront restaurant at Milford on Sea.

Some residents in Dorset and Hampshire have been evacuated from their flooded homes, including 25 homes in the Buckskin area of Basingstoke, Hampshire.

Waves of up to 33ft (10m) reportedly threatened to cut off Portland in Dorset, while people in Portsmouth have been receiving hoax calls urging them to evacuate their homes amid flooding fears, Hampshire Police said.

The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) for Lyme Bay said its lookout at Burton Bradstock had been "blown away" on Friday night.

Earlier, the M40 was closed between junction 6 and 8 for 12 hours due to fallen trees on the carriageway.

The Army has been in Datchet in Berkshire loading up sandbags. Volunteers are helping with the clear up in the town.

Reading University microbiologist Ben Neuman said he had found high levels of faecal-contaminated, disease-ridden bacteria in flood water in Wraysbury, Berkshire.

He said these bacteria could "cause typhoid fever, dysentery and hepatitis".

Armed Forces minister Mark Francois was in Reading to meet the reserve soldiers from 7th Battalion the Rifles, who volunteered to help with the flooding.

Water has been restored to thousands of homes in Hampshire, from Farnham to West Meon, following power failures at South East Water sites on Friday.

A motorist has been charged with causing the deaths of two cyclists who were struck by a car.

Alexander Farrar Walters, of Beech Road, Purley-on-Thames, is accused of killing the male cyclists in the Berkshire village on Thursday night.

He is also charged with aggravated vehicle-taking, driving while disqualified and using a vehicle without insurance.

The 31-year-old will appear before Reading Magistrates Court on Monday.

The cyclists have been named locally as father-of-two John Moorland, 30, and Kris Jarvis, 39, a father of five.

Richard E Grant to star in Downton

Richard E Grant to star in Downton

Anna Chancellor/Richard E Grant Chancellor and Grant will both have guest roles in the new series

Richard E Grant and Anna Chancellor will join the cast of Downton Abbey for the fifth series of the ITV drama.

Both actors will play guests of the Grantham family. Grant will play Simon Bricker and Chancellor will play Lady Anstruther.

Dame Harriet Walter will reprise her role as Lady Shackleton, alongside Peter Egan, as Lord Flintshire.

24 star Rade Sherbedgia will play a Russian refugee who has fled the revolution after World War II.

Chancellor is currently starring in Fleming Sky's drama about James Bond writer Ian Fleming, while Grant is appearing in the new series of US series Girls.

'Romance'

The period drama, which follows the Grantham family and their servants, will return to ITV later this year, after the show's executive producer ruled out the show coming to an end in the near future.

Gareth Neame promised that the fifth series would have "all the usual highs and lows, romance, drama and comedy".

Speculation over the show's future arose when its creator Julian Fellowes told a newspaper he would not be able to continue writing its storylines at the same time as working on his next project - The Gilded Age, described as an American version of Downton Abbey.

Series four of Downton Abbey achieved an average of 11.8 million viewers in the UK.

Last summer it was announced that Oscar-nominated Sideways star Paul Giamatti was joining the cast of Downton, as the "maverick, playboy" brother of Lady Grantham.

He joined the cast for the Christmas special, which was watched by 6.6 million on Christmas Day, rising to 9.4 million once catch-up services were taken into account.

HG Wells: The first celebrity charity campaigner?

HG Wells: The first celebrity charity campaigner?

H G Wells HG Wells was involved in the campaign to raise funds for an association

"It is proposed to form a diabetic association open ultimately to all diabetics, rich or poor, for mutual aid or assistance, and to promote the study, the diffusion of knowledge, and the proper treatment of diabetes in this country."

So wrote HG Wells in a letter to the Times 80 years ago, in 1934.

The author, famed for being an early pioneer of science-fiction writing, also had a strong interest in helping people with diabetes - because he was one of them.

A year before, another letter from him had appeared in the newspaper appealing for funds to support the diabetes clinic at King's College Hospital in London.

Its success led the renowned thinker to believe people were willing to support a more adventurous enterprise.

"Something psychologically and socially valuable had been discovered: the latent solidarity of people subject to a distinctive disorder," he wrote in 1934.

More prosperous people with diabetes were to be approached, to pay £5 to become members of the Diabetes Association, which would then work for everyone with the condition.

HG Wells wrote more than 100 books, including the science-fiction tales The Island of Dr Moreau, The Invisible Man and The Time Machine.

But it was his doctor Robert Daniel (RD) Lawrence who persuaded him to lead the campaign to raise funds for diabetes.

Dr Lawrence's clinic at King's College Hospital in London had become cramped and outdated, so in 1933 he asked some of his more affluent patients for contributions.

Wells initially gave just 2s 6d to fund the association, pleading poverty.

But when Lawrence complained, Wells wrote his first letter to the Times - appealing for others to contribute funds - and got the funding needed for new and improved facilities.

'Insulin, it works. Come quick'
RD Lawrence RD Lawrence was one of the first recipients of insulin

Dr Lawrence had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1920, when there was no effective treatment and the condition was fatal.

He moved to Italy, expecting to live out his last few years there. But in early 1923, he received a telegram from a colleague at King's Hospital London that said: "Insulin, it works. Come quick."

His biographer and daughter-in-law Jane Lawrence tells how, by that point, he was "dwindling away" but he made it back across Europe and received his first dose of insulin in May of that year."

RD Lawrence went on to become a leading figure in forging understanding of diabetes as a condition and fighting for those with it be able to live normal lives.

His writings helped define how diabetes was viewed for decades. His book The Diabetic Life was first published in 1925, ran to 14 editions and was published in many languages. A practical guide to living with diabetes, The Diabetic ABC, was published in 1929.

Forming the Diabetic Association was part of that. Dr Lawrence was elected chairman - a position he held until 1961 - while HG Wells became president.

Jane Lawrence says: "This was the first patient-centred association in the world. It was so unusual in those days where the doctor was 'god'."

High-fat diet

Not long before this, type 1 diabetes had been a death sentence. People with the condition needed insulin - and it was only used in humans in 1922.

Even in the 1930s, people would only have had access to insulin if they could afford it and life would not have been pleasant, even for them.

They would have had to use large, thick needles to administer insulin, which was from animals and not fully purified and so there was a high risk of allergic reactions. Today, most insulin is made in laboratories.

The needles they used would have needed to be washed and sterilised every day - as well as sharpened regularly.

They were given a fixed amount of insulin - so would have to eat the right amount of food to counteract this, whether or not this left them feeling too full or still hungry.

And their diet had to be around 70% fat.

One of the association's first campaigns was for free access to insulin, well before the formation of the NHS.

'Following in the footsteps'

The organisation became the British Diabetic Association in 1954 and Diabetes UK in 2000.

It is now a charity with an annual income of £28m, with 300,000 supporters across the UK.

There are 3.2m people diagnosed with the condition, and an estimated 630,000 who have diabetes, but don't know it. Around 90% have type 2, which usually develops over the age of 40 when people produce too little insulin - or the insulin produced fails to work properly. Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor.

Barbara Young, Diabetes UK's current chief executive, said: "All of us who work at Diabetes UK are immensely proud of our heritage, as it is hugely inspiring to follow in the footsteps of an author of the stature of HG Wells and an eminent physician like RD Lawrence.

"Diabetes UK's work during the 80 years since Wells wrote his letter to the Times is one of the reasons why life for people with diabetes today is much better than it was in 1934."

Wells was also prescient in seeing how the patient-group model might expand.

In yet another prediction of the future, he envisaged the plethora of health groups we have now, writing: "The experiment ... might not end with diabetics."
