Syria opponents meet in 'good start'

Syria foes meet twice in 'good start' to Geneva II talks

Bashar Jafari says suggestions that discussions will include talking about President Assad's future are "a big lie"

Syria's opposition and government have met twice in what the UN's Lakhdar Brahimi hailed a "good beginning" to peace talks.

Mr Brahimi, who is mediating, admitted the sides "haven't achieved much" but said he was trying to build confidence by broaching humanitarian issues first.

He said the getting an aid convoy into Homs had been discussed, and imprisoned people would be discussed on Sunday.

Delegates in Geneva are aiming at small concessions, not a full peace deal.

"Ending terrorism and violence" is the top priority, Syrian officials say. They insist it is too early to discuss President Bashar al-Assad's position.

In the first meeting, the two delegations filed in through separate doors into one room in the UN Geneva Headquarters, and sat down at the same U-shaped table, but said nothing to each other.

Mr Brahimi said another two-hour meeting had taken place in the afternoon.

He admitted no direct words had been exchanged but said the two sides were "talking through me to one another - this is what happens in civilised discussions," he said, where sides addressed each other via the chairperson.

On reports the Syrian regime were only concerned to discuss "terrorism" in Syria, he insisted "both sides have agreed we are here to discuss the implementation of the 30 June communique" - the blueprint for peace talks set out at a meeting in Geneva in 2012.

He said he was "praying for some good news" in meetings on Sunday.

'Dictators don't like to listen'

There is hope that minor progress will pave the way for the discussion of wider issues like political transition next week, although there has been no sign of common ground on this so far.

Shortly after the initial meeting, the chief of staff to the leader of Syria's National Coalition, Monzer Akbik, claimed that the transition process had started in earnest.

"Today we had the chance to speak directly to regime... You know dictators usually, they don't like to listen. But today they had to listen to us and to the voice of the Syrian people that they want transition from dictatorship to democracy."

However Syria's Ambassador to the UN Bashar Jafari - part of the government delegation - earlier told the BBC that it was "too early" to talk of Mr Assad stepping down and that the issue was "not the priority".

Monzer Akbik said talks would focus on the country's humanitarian crisis as well as political transition

"Item number one should be putting an end to the terrorism and to the violence," he said.

The envoy said the common ground between the parties "should be that we should talk about everything, everything, without any selectivity... and no preconditions and no hidden agendas".

But he accused the coalition delegation of harbouring "personal hatreds towards the government for whatever reasons".

Syria's civil conflict has claimed well over 100,000 lives since it began in 2011.

The violence has also driven 9.5 million people from their homes, creating a major humanitarian crisis within Syria and for its neighbours.

Homs Opening a corridor to allow humanitarian aid into areas of Homs is thought to be under discussion
Syrian opposition chief negotiator Hadi al-Bahra (C) arrives with delegation member Anas al-Abda (L) The opposition wants President Assad to step down as a condition of peace
Bashar Jaafari, the Syrian government's ambassador to the United Nations and a member of the Syrian government delegation Syria's Ambassador to the UN told the BBC talking about Mr Assad's position was "not the priority"

The opposition and government are fundamentally divided over the aims of the conference.

The government delegation has said the main issue of the talks is finding a solution to foreign-backed "terrorism", by which it means the whole of the armed opposition.

The opposition, however, had insisted that the regime commit in writing to the 2012 Geneva I communique, which called for a transition process.

The communique urged Syria to form a transitional governing authority that "could include members of the present government and the opposition and other groups".

Hollande confirms Trierweiler split

French President Hollande confirms Trierweiler split

Gayet, Hollande, Trierweiler Valerie Trierweiler (R) was taken to hospital after allegations of the affair emerged

French President Francois Hollande has confirmed his separation from his partner Valerie Trierweiler, following earlier denials from his office.

He told the French news agency AFP that their "shared life" had ended.

Earlier, his office at the Elysee Palace told the BBC "false rumours" had been circulating in the French media, and no statement would be forthcoming.

Two weeks ago a magazine published photos apparently showing Mr Hollande's affair with an actress, Julie Gayet.

Ms Trierweiler spent a week in hospital after the revelations.

Mr Hollande, who has never denied having an affair with Julie Gayet, has admitted to a "difficult moment" in his relationship with Ms Trierweiler.

At the time, he promised to clarify the situation before his official visit to Washington on 11 February.

Mr Hollande told AFP he was speaking in a personal capacity and not as the head of state.

"I am making it known that I have put an end to my shared life with Valerie Trierweiler," he said.

On Thursday Ms Trierweiler sacked her lawyer for saying she was seeking to end her relationship with Mr Hollande "with the greatest possible dignity".

Ms Trierweiler, who has continued to work as a journalist for the glossy magazine Paris-Match, is travelling to India on Sunday in support of the work of the French charity Action Against Hunger.

Since she left hospital, she has been staying at an official residence, La Lanterne, near Versailles.

"He [Mr Hollande] has consulted her and brought her up to date, she accepts the situation as a fait accompli, but she is leaving it to him to take the initiative," a member of Ms Trierweiler's entourage told the newspaper Le Parisien.

Ms Trierweiler and Mr Hollande have never married. She announced their relationship six months after he left his previous partner, one-time French presidential candidate Segolene Royal, with whom he has four children.

For her part, Ms Gayet has announced she is suing Closer magazine, which published the original reports, for breach of privacy.

Closer magazine said that the affair had begun during the 2012 presidential race.

Liverpool still hold Salah hope

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers still holds Mohamed Salah hope

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says he has not given up on signing Mohamed Salah from Swiss champions Basel despite his imminent move to Chelsea.

Salah, 21, is yet to undergo a medical or agree personal terms, but is expected to move to Chelsea having held talks with the Reds earlier this month.

However, Rodgers says they will not give up on the Egypt midfielder.

"The window is not closed yet so we haven't given up on him, no," Rodgers told BBC Sport.

Rodgers's side advanced into the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth and Liverpool's manager says he is still hopeful of adding to his squad before the end of the January transfer window.

"Salah was a player we're interested in and we hoped we could do a deal but as of yet there is nothing done on it," he added.

"The club is still looking for players we can bring in to strengthen the squad.

"It is a difficult market in January so we'll see what happens. If nothing comes in then the players I have have been outstanding for me this season and we'll enter into the final part of it with confidence if we have the same group of players."

Ukraine opposition offered PM job

Ukraine's President Yanukovych offers PM position to opposition leader

Police are spraying protesters with water which quickly freezes their clothing, says Steve Rosenberg

Ukraine's President Viktor Yanukovych has offered the position of prime minister to an opposition leader, Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Mr Yatsenyuk is from jailed ex-PM Yulia Tymoshenko's party.

The offer came after talks on Saturday with opposition leaders in a new effort to end worsening unrest that is spreading across the country.

The interior minister earlier said efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully were "futile".

Four protesters and a policeman have died in clashes since November when the government rejected closer EU ties.

The crisis escalated this week when two activists were killed, and another was found dead with torture marks in a forest near the capital.

A 45-year-old protester is said to have died in a Kiev hospital on Saturday, after sustaining injuries in earlier violence.

President Viktor Yanukovych had promised to make concessions to try to end the country's crisis, pledging to amend anti-protest laws and reshuffle the cabinet.

But Vitaly Klitschko - one of the opposition leaders invited to the Yanukovych talks - said the protesters now wanted the president to resign.

Earlier, Ukraine's interior minister said talks with protesters had failed.

Vitaliy Zakharchenko - in charge of the police and one of the figures most despised by the protesters - blamed "radical groups" for the unrest, adding that protesters had arms.

"We will consider those who remain on the Maidan [the square] and in captured buildings to be extremist groups," he said

"The events of recent days in the Ukrainian capital showed that our attempts to peacefully resolve the conflict without resorting to forceful opposition remain futile," he added.

Although the protest movement - the "EuroMaidan" - is largely peaceful, a hardcore of radicals have been fighting pitched battles with police away from the main protest on Independence Square.

Mr Zakharchenko accused opposition of no longer able to control "radical forces" and of putting civilians in danger.

He also said that activists had shot a police officer and kidnapped three others - allegations denied as "false and dangerous" by protest leaders.

Later on Saturday, Mr Zakharchenko said protesters had released two officers, who were subsequently sent to hospital. Again, protesters called his words a provocation.

On Friday protesters seized a number of government buildings in Ukrainian cities outside Kiev, particularly in the west, which has traditionally favoured closer ties with Europe, including in the cities of Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lutsk and Lviv.

On Saturday the protests spread to cities further east, including Vinnytsya, just west of Kiev.

Three dead in Maryland mall shooting

Breaking news

Three people have been killed in a shooting at a shopping centre in Maryland in the US.

Howard County Police urged people inside the suburban Columbia Mall "to stay in place".

They said one of the dead was "located near gun and ammunition".

Reports suggest the centre, about 45 minutes outside Washington DC, was on "lockdown" because of an "active shooter situation". The centre is a popular weekend shopping destination.

The mall of about 200 stores in Howard County, which has an indoor carousel ride and play area, is a popular weekend destination for families and young children.

AM warned on inappropriate behaviour

Welsh Lib Dem William Powell AM warned on inappropriate behaviour

William Powell William Powell pictured during a debate in the Senedd

Lib Dem AM William Powell has been given a formal written warning after a young activist complained of his inappropriate behaviour, it has emerged.

The woman, now 21, alleged that in 2011 he gave her and two other women the strong alcoholic drink absinthe, touched her leg and put his hands round their waists.

The Mid and West Wales AM offered an unreserved apology.

The Lib Dems confirmed the warning.

The incident involving Mr Powell, his party's agriculture spokesman, was reported in the Daily Mail newspaper.

The article also refers to allegations about the behaviour of the former Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire Lembit Opik.

Anonymous

It claims he tried to kiss the activist when she was 17. Mr Opik denies the allegations.

In a statement on Saturday the Welsh Lib Dems said they received an anonymous complaint in May last year about William Powell's behaviour in an incident in June 2011, after the complainant had spoken to the chair of her local party.

She said she did not want to pursue a formal grievance procedure and wished to remain anonymous, but wanted the party to be aware of the issue.

The Welsh Lib Dems say the complaint was treated seriously, a report was compiled and passed to its chief whip in Cardiff Bay, Aled Roberts.

Mr Powell was interviewed by Mr Roberts and given a formal written warning that such behaviour would not be tolerated.

'Cooperated fully'

He was told any future misdemeanour could result in "more serious sanctions being imposed".

The party says that no further complaint has been received since.

William Powell himself said in a statement: "I am aware of an anonymous complaint having been made.

"The complaint was put to me by the chief whip and I cooperated fully with him in this matter.

"I apologised to the chief whip and offered an unreserved apology, through him, to anyone else for any hurt or offence caused and I would certainly wish to do so again, in writing or in person."

The incident is a further embarrassment for the Liberal Democrats.

At Westminster they have suspended their MP Mike Hancock after a report into claims of sexual misconduct towards a female constituent was leaked, and suspended the party membership of Lord Rennard after he refused to apologise over claims of sexual harassment that he denies.

Wigan forward Nick Powell will be on the bench, having played through the pain barrier last weekend.

New loan signing Josh McEachran will also not feature - the Chelsea midfielder is on a specific training plan to improve his fitness.

Paddy McCarthy is expected to make the Palace squad after groin trouble.

But Jerome Thomas and Kagisho Dikgacoi are still suffering from calf problems and Jack Hunt (ankle) and Glenn Murray (knee) are also out.

Wigan manager Uwe Rosler insists he is targeting victory over Premier League opposition: "We are at home and we want to go further [in the competition].

"We know we can win games - we have shown that since I came to the club.

"I say this even when we play Crystal Palace - a Premier League side. It's up to us, are we winning or not? We have the quality in our team to finish 90 minutes as a winner."

But Crystal Palace defender Dean Moxey wants a good run in the competition: "It's the FA Cup so it's a big thing.

"It will be tough at Wigan, so we have to get ready for that. Of course we fancy a run in the FA Cup.

"The main thing is the league obviously, but then everyone wants an FA Cup winners' medal, don't they? It will be nice to have a run in it."

MATCH FACTS

• This is the first-ever meeting between these sides in the FA Cup.

Quebec fire home search resumes in L'Isle Verte

Police investigator in the rubble of fire-hit retirement home in L'Isle-Verte, Quebec (24 Jan) Rescuers have been working in difficult conditions

The search has resumed for 24 people still missing after a deadly fire swept through their retirement home in the Canadian province of Quebec.

Eight people are now confirmed dead after the blaze in L'Isle Verte, north-east of Quebec City, on Thursday.

A police spokesman said new equipment - designed mainly for de-icing ships - was being brought in as temperatures hovered around -10C (14F).

Police are examining the theory the fire was started by a cigarette.

However, spokesman Lt Guy Lapointe told a news conference on Saturday that it was one possibility among many.

Two of the victims have been formally identified and their names will be released later on Saturday, police said.

Rescuers suspended their search overnight as temperatures fell as low as -20C.

The ruins of the Residence du Havre have collapsed and are frozen over with a thick layer of ice from fire hoses.

"The conditions are very, very difficult," Lt Lapointe said. "Our people are exhausted."

"The conditions are very, very difficult," Lt Lapointe said. "Our people are exhausted."

Sergio Aguero scored a second-half hat-trick as Manchester City came from 2-0 down to deny Watford a famous FA Cup fourth-round victory at Etihad Stadium.

Fernando Forestieri's low shot and Troy Deeney, who got on the end of a flowing move, gave the Hornets a two-goal lead.

Aguero started the comeback on the hour when he turned in Aleksandar Kolarov's cross before curling home a leveller.

Kolarov's 40-yard shot somehow squirmed under Jonathan Bond before Aguero headed home to complete his hat-trick.

More to follow.
