Chelsea's Premier League title challenge continued to gather momentum ominously as they cruised to victory at Southampton.

Southampton, now with only one win in nine games, kept Chelsea at bay until manager Jose Mourinho introduced Brazilian duo Oscar and Willian early in the second half to give his side an extra cutting edge.

And how perfectly the move worked as they made crucial contributions to give Chelsea 10 points out of 12 over the festive period, in what was eventually a comfortable win that keeps them only two points behind leaders Arsenal.

Fernando Torres, a threat throughout, headed Chelsea in front on the hour after Oscar had struck the post. Oscar then set up a superb second for Willian 11 minutes later before racing clear to put the finishing touches to a display that combined quality and efficiency.

The only blot was a booking for Oscar as he dived when he should have scored after rounding Southampton keeper Kelvin Davis, otherwise he produced a wonderful display.

Mourinho reintroduced Juan Mata into Chelsea's line-up - but it was fellow countryman Torres who posed all the early threat to Southampton.

Torres caused problems with his pace and was almost on target early on only for Jose Fonte to get a crucial touch on to his shot from edge of the area and deflect it just wide.

And as Chelsea applied early pressure, Andre Schurrle shot just wide from the edge of the area after Southampton could only partially clear a corner.

Ramires was also a danger with his runs from deep, forcing Davis to race out of his goal to clear at his feet and also touch a powerful, rising drive over the top.

Southampton, however, were making opportunities of their own and occasionally forced Chelsea's defence into some desperate work to ensure they remained on level terms.

Ashley Cole, back in the starting line-up after coming on as a substitute in the win against Liverpool, twice had to show his experience and quality with crucial interceptions, while a combination of defenders was required to stop Adam Lallana after he had been set up by Luke Chambers.

Saints' talented young defender Luke Shaw went off injured at half-time, to be replaced by Nathaniel Clyne - and Mourinho was making a double change of his own just eight minutes after the break.

Oscar and Willian came on for a dejected-looking Mata and Schurrle as Chelsea went in pursuit of the crucial opening goal.

The first action involving Oscar was contentious, seemingly choosing to go to ground instead of score as he rounded Davis, picking up a booking from referee Martin Atkinson.

Oscar made a more constructive contribution as Chelsea went ahead on the hour. His effort came back off the post and Torres demonstrated swift reactions to direct the rebound into the net.

The goal was the signal for Pocchetino to bring on Rickie Lambert and he almost made an instant impact, taking advantage of confusion in Chelsea's defence but only heading straight at Petr Cech.

Oscar may have blotted his copybook to get a booking but he was once again the creator as Chelsea extended their lead, showing brilliant footwork before setting up Willian to score with a thumping low drive from the edge of the area.

And he got the goal he deserved to wrap up the three points, taking Eden Hazard's perfect pass to beat Davis with ease.

Devon battered by severe weather

Devon floods: Severe weather prompts several rescues

Feniton flooding, 1 January 2014 The village of Feniton, which was badly flooded in 2010 and again in 2012, has been flooded

Severe weather has led to serious flooding in Devon, prompting a number of rescues.

Six people, including a baby, were trapped in cars in flood water in three separate incidents at Fenny Bridges, Ford Bridge and Avonwick, South Brent.

A canoeist was rescued after becoming stranded on an island in the middle of the swollen river Dart at Hembury Castle, Buckfastleigh

Flooding has also affected Kenn, near Exeter and Feniton.

Devon County Council tweeted that the River Taw had burst its banks near Umberleigh and drivers were getting stuck on and A377.

At 17:00 GMT, the Environment Agency had issued 31 flood warnings (flooding expected) and 54 flood alerts (flooding possible) in the South West.

Flooding at Kenn, near Exeter, 1 Jan 2014 Flooding has affected Kenn, near Exeter, which was also hit badly in 2012
River Dart, 1 January 2014 A canoeist had to be rescued from the swollen and fast flowing River Dart

The village of Feniton was badly hit in 2010 and again in 2012.

"Feniton is starting to flood and it's looking quite serious," Claire Wright told BBC News.

"The rain is coming down heavily and it has been for many hours and fields are already saturated with all the rain we've had over the past few days."

Ms Wright, an East Devon District councillor, said drains were "spewing sewage" and villagers were "on tenterhooks".

Heavy rain and severe gales are forecast until midnight.

A Met Office yellow "be prepared" warning is in force for the South West until midnight.

About 40mm (2in) of rain is expected in some areas, with severe south or south-westerly gales gusting up to 60mph.

The Met Office said with ground already saturated, the public should be aware of the risk of further localised flooding.

Devon and Cornwall Police has urged drivers to take care and be prepared for "unexpected puddles or flood water around the next corner".

The force has also said members of the public should stay away from swollen rivers.

"With the previous amounts of heavy rain we have had, rivers are running very high at the moment and there is an increasing risk that their banks could burst causing further flooding," a police spokesman said.

Sporting fixtures, including racing at Exeter and Exeter City's football match against Wycombe Wanderers, were cancelled.

The weather also led to the cancellation of a number of annual New Year's Day swims in Devon and Cornwall.

NHS campaigner suffers online abuse

Julie Bailey: NHS campaigner suffers online abuse

Julie Bailey Julie Bailey started a campaign to raise standards of care in the NHS after the death of her mother

A woman who helped expose failings at Stafford Hospital has been subjected to online abuse after being recognised in the Queen's New Year Honours.

Julie Bailey, who set up the campaign group Cure the NHS, was made a CBE for services to the care of older people.

She said she was "hurt" by comments made on the Support Stafford Hospital Facebook page which accused her of "wrecking health services in the town".

One post also said her award was a "complete insult" to hospital staff.

Administrators called in to manage the NHS Trust which runs Stafford Hospital recommended last month it should be dissolved with services taken over by neighbouring NHS trusts.

Ms Bailey said people had wrongly targeted her over the proposals.

'Hostile town'

"Cure the NHS had nothing to do with the changes to services to hospital services," she said.

"Our priority has only ever been patient safety, if that means transferring services to other hospitals then we support that move.

"We must always ensure that others aren't harmed as our loved ones were. Sadly for some their priority is having a hospital on their doorstep and not patient safety."

Ms Bailey said in June she was forced to leave her home and business in Stafford because many people had been "hostile" towards her over "lies" she wanted the hospital closed.

In May, paramedic Murph Guest was fired by West Midlands Ambulance Service over abusive comments made on Facebook towards Ms Bailey.

Ms Bailey founded Cure the NHS after the death of her mother at the hospital in 2007, and successfully led calls for a public inquiry chaired by Robert Francis QC.

Iraq's 2013 death toll 'hits 8,868'

Iraq's annual death toll highest in five years - UN

Mourners in the Shia holy city of Najaf hold the coffin of a soldier killed in the city of Ramadi (30 December 2013) The UN's head of mission urged the Iraqi authorities to address the roots of the violence

The United Nations says at least 7,818 civilians and 1,050 members of the security forces were killed in violent attacks across Iraq in 2013.

December alone saw at least 759 people killed, 661 of them civilians.

The annual toll is the highest in five years, but still significantly below those recoded at the height of the sectarian conflict in 2006 and 2007.

Violence has surged since April, when the Shia-led government launched a crackdown on a Sunni protest camp.

Extremist Sunni militants linked to al-Qaeda subsequently stepped up attacks across the country, while Shia groups began deadly reprisals.

'Sad and terrible record'

Tensions have been raised further since Saturday, when security forces arrested a prominent Sunni MP in the western city of Ramadi, triggering clashes that left six people dead.

Gunmen in Ramadi (30 December 2014) Thirteen people have been killed in Ramadi since security forces dismantled a Sunni protest camp

On Wednesday, al-Qaeda militants were said to have appeared on the streets of several towns across Anbar province, taking over abandoned police stations and army posts.

Prime Minister Nouri Maliki, a Shia, appealed to Sunni tribesmen to help combat the militants, saying he was ready to address their grievances.

Sunni Arabs have been calling for Mr Maliki's resignation for more than a year. They accuse his government of discriminating against their minority community and unfairly targeting it with tough anti-terrorism measures which officials say have been implemented to stem the violence.

Announcing the 2013 death toll, the UN head of mission in Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov, said: "This is a sad and terrible record which confirms once again the urgent need for the Iraqi authorities to address the roots of violence to curb this infernal circle."

The Iraqi government reported that 7,154 people were killed in 2013, including security forces personnel and militants. Iraq Body Count, a UK-based organisation that has tracked violence in the country since 2003, said it had recorded 9,475 civilian deaths.

"If current violence levels continue unabated throughout the coming year, then 2014 threatens to be as deadly as 2004, which saw the two sieges of Fallujah [by US forces] and Iraq's insurgency take hold," IBC said.

Stag attack woman has throat surgery

Stag attack woman Kate Stone has operation on windpipe

Kate Stone Kate Stone was the victim of "a freakish accident" said a witness

A woman who was seriously injured when she was gored by a stag in the Highlands has undergone an operation to try to repair her windpipe.

Kate Stone, 44, from Cambridge, was injured by the animal near Fort William at about 02:30 on Monday.

She was treated by paramedics before being taken to Fort William's Belford hospital, and later transferred by air to the Southern General in Glasgow.

She has been put into an induced coma for a week and her condition is stable.

A statement released by a colleague at Dr Stone's print firm, Novalia, said she had an operation late on Tuesday afternoon to try to repair damage to her trachea.

It said: "The operation went well and she remained stable throughout.

"The doctors made a decision to keep her in an induced coma for the next week to minimise any movement that may rupture the wound. She remains in a stable condition and she is now in the healing process from the first operation.

Stag (generic) A witness to the incident said the full-grown stag had panicked

"Her family are with her over this new year period and all her friends are continuing to offer support."

Dr Stone was standing with a group of friends outside a private residence in Lochailort when the incident happened.

She had been on a short break in the Highlands, staying at the Mo-Dhachaidh B&B in Lochailort, which is owned by Gary Burton.

Mr Burton said he heard about the attack when one of Dr Stone's friends returned at about 02:30.

"I think what happened was that the stag panicked," he said. "It was trapped in a fenced garden, having got through a gate. I don't think there was anywhere else to go and it charged out of the gate," he said.

"It's very bizarre and very horrific."

He described it as a "one-in-a-million event".

Liverpool ended a run of successive defeats and got their quest for a top-four finish back on track with a comfortable victory over Hull.

Daniel Agger nodded in a Philippe Coutinho corner to set the hosts up for a seventh straight home win.

It was all Liverpool as Jordan Henderson and Coutinho went close before Luis Suarez doubled the advantage with an exquisite free-kick.

Hull created little, but did well to prevent the hosts from scoring a third.

Pope urges tolerance to end violence

Pope Francis urges tolerance to end violence

Pope Francis addresses pilgrims from a balcony above St Peter's Square, 1 January The Pope departed from his prepared text

The head of the Catholic Church has called for the world to unite against violence as a "community of brothers" in his first New Year blessing.

Addressing pilgrims in St Peter's Square, Pope Francis departed from his prepared text to vent frustration at the level of conflict in the world.

"What is happening in the heart of man?" he asked. "It's time to stop."

Without referring to any specific conflicts, he urged people to accept each other's differences.

"We belong to the same human family and we share a common destiny," he said, speaking from his studio window overlooking the crowds in the square at the Vatican.

"This brings a responsibility for each to work so that the world becomes a community of brothers who respect each other, accept each other in one's diversity, and take care of one another."

The Pope plans major reforms in Church organisation this year and will soon announce the appointment of a new group of cardinals to replace those who have died or reached the age of 80 in recent years, the BBC's David Willey reports from Rome.

He wants a Church that is less centred on the Vatican and to give more power to local bishops, our correspondent says.

Dimitar Berbatov's fifth goal of the season helped Fulham climb out of the Premier League drop zone with a victory over fellow strugglers West Ham.

The Hammers had taken the lead when Mohamed Diame slotted home from a long ball but Steve Sidwell equalised with a header from a corner.

West Ham captain Kevin Nolan was sent off just before half-time for an off-the-ball kick at Fernando Amorebieta.

And Fulham made the extra man count when Bulgarian Berbatov tapped home.

More to follow.
