CBI: Chinese teaching would help maths confidence

Chinese teachers would help English students become more confident with maths, a CBI executive has claimed.

The CBI's Director for Employment and Skills, Neil Carberry, said the Chinese method of teaching maths as a "language" rather than as a "problem" would inspire students and raise standards.

A third of the CBI's members offer employees remedial training in maths because of poor ability levels, he added.

Mr Carberry told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast: "In Shanghai they focus on maths as a language... to understand the conceptual framework of maths and that helps build confidence."
