A 16-year-old boy who was arrested on suspicion of murdering a 17-year-old girl has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Officers found the girl's body after being called to a flat in Amy Road in Oxted, Surrey, on Friday.

Police said the boy would be transferred to a secure hospital while remaining on police bail.

Sam Gyimah, Conservative MP for East Surrey, said the community had been "knocked for six".

Surrey Police said the investigation was in its early stages.

The suspect and the girl are thought to have known each other, the spokesman said.

Det Ch Insp Claire Pridgeon, the senior investigating officer, said: "This is a complex investigation which will no doubt continue for some time.

"We believe this to be an isolated incident and that there is no risk to the further community."

'Shockwaves felt'

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of death.

Mr Gyimah said: "It's tragic because the lives involved are so young.

"It's a 17-year-old girl who's lost her life, a 16-year-old boy has been arrested.

"I think just the young age of the people involved has completely knocked the community for six."

The dead girl, whose name has not been released, was remembered at church services across Surrey earlier.

The Reverend Andrew Rumsey, Rector of Oxted, said: "It's a homely town where neighbours are friends and so the shockwaves of any news like this are going to be acutely felt in our community.

"So we opened the church just in case there was a need for space to reflect or pray for people as they received the news."
