One person dead after crash near Strabane in Tyrone

Scene One person died and four others were taken to hospital after the crash on the main road from Sion Mills to Victoria Bridge

A 62-year-old man has died and four others have been injured in a two vehicle crash in County Tyrone.

The collision happened outside Strabane on Melmount Road between Sion Mills to Victoria Bridge.

Police said the collision involved a black Suzuki Vitara jeep and a blue Toyota Avensis happened at about 10:50 GMT.

The man who died was a passenger in one of the vehicles.

Two men, one in his 20s and one in his 40s and two women, one in her 20s and one in her 50s have been taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries, which are described as serious, police have said.

Four fire appliances were sent to the scene along with paramedics.

'Complex needs'

Earlier on Wednesday, a spokesperson from the Western Health and Social Care Trust said they were dealing with patients who had "complex needs" and asked that the public "only visit the emergency department if necessary".

The trust said they have since returned to normal.

Diversions are in place at Victoria Bridge and on the Strabane side of Sion Mills.

Police have asked people to avoid the area.
