A man has appeared in court charged with the murders of his wife and son in Midlothian.

The bodies of 29-year-old Janet Lockhart and two-year-old Michael were discovered in Bonnyrigg on Saturday.

Garry Lockhart, 32, made a brief appearance in private on petition at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, before Sheriff Paul Arthurson QC.

No plea or declaration was made on his behalf and the case was continued. He was remanded in custody.

Mrs Lockhart's family thanked friends and the police for their support.

Her mother Maureen Hood, father John Hood and brother Dr John Paul Hood said: "We shared 29 wonderful years with our precious Janet, who was a loving daughter, sister and mother.

"She always put others before herself. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being you. We do not know how we will cope without you.

"To our grandson Michael, you lit up our lives. Sleep tight our angel and look after each other until we all meet again."
