Murder inquiry over body found in river at Grangetown, Cardiff
A cordon closed off part of Taff Embankment after the man's body was found beneath the bridge Police have launched a murder investigation after a 45-year-old man's body was found partially submerged in a river beneath a road bridge.
The man, who had suffered head injuries, was discovered by Penarth Road bridge in Grangetown, Cardiff, in the early hours of Thursday.
A police cordon was set up on the Taff Embankment side of the River Taff.
A post mortem-examination is continuing to establish the cause of death, and police have yet to name the man.
South Wales Police received an anonymous call just before midnight on Wednesday from a phone kiosk on Clare Road, Grangetown, calling them to the scene.
Det Supt Paul Hurley, of the force's specialist crime investigations team, said: "Specially-trained officers are... breaking the tragic news to the man's parents and they will be offered our full support.
"We are very grateful to those who have already contacted us with information, particularly a man who identified himself to a PCSO (police community support officer) earlier today as being the person who made the initial 999 call from a telephone kiosk on Clare Road.
"We are appealing for witnesses and I would ask anyone who was in the Taff Embankment area between 6pm on Wednesday and 12.30am [Thursday] to contact South Wales Police.
"We are also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the man in the hours leading up to his body being found."
The man was white and was wearing light blue jeans, a navy anorak-style jacket, and a light coloured baseball cap with the wording "Crosshatch".
He may have had a black holdall too, said police.
An incident room has been set up at Cardiff central police station, and a police cordon remains at the scene.
