Thousands queue for Peaky role

Thousands attend Peaky Blinders auditions in Birmingham

Producers said they were looking to cast a "pivotal role" in the new series of Peaky Blinders, set in 1920s Birmingham

Thousands of people have turned up at casting auditions for the Birmingham-based BBC drama Peaky Blinders.

The first series of the show, set in the 1920s and starring Cillian Murphy, attracted audiences of about 2.4 million.

Producers appealed for local people to come forward in a hope to cast three or four "pivotal" roles.

By the time doors opened for casting at Minerva works in Fazeley, queues were stretching several hundred yards.

Dominic Jones Dominic Jones, 17, was one of thousands hoping to win a part

One of those hoping for a part was Dominic Jones, 17, an A-Level student from Bishop Walsh Catholic School in Sutton Coldfield.

He said he was currently auditioning to go to drama school.

"You've got to take every chance that comes.

"I really liked [the series], it's very gritty. I thought it was really cool.

"I feel it would be a fun part to play, because it's very different to how I am now."

'Go for it'

Daniel Edwards, 15, from Acocks Green, was one of those who got through to the next round of auditions.

"I saw [the advert] on Facebook," he said.

"I really want the part now.

"Now I've got through to the next round I want to go for it fully."

Producers said they were looking for white men aged between 13 and 19 and mixed-race men aged between 15 and 17.

Matthew Burkett, 16, from Solihull, said he would "love to be part of the show" and hoped his accent - as someone who was born and bred in Birmingham - would stand him in good stead for a part.

The first series, which was generally well received, attracted some criticism or some of the cast's "dodgy" West Midlands accents.

Filming for the second series is set to begin at the end of February and expected to broadcast in the autumn.

One of the executive producers Jamie Glazebrook said the second series would see the main Shelby family extend their influence.

Joe Cole, Cillian Murphy and Paul Anderson The BBC Two show starred Cillian Murphy (centre)

"The enterprise is expanding and the 1920s begin to roar. They're going to be fighting some astonishing battles," he said.

Set in Birmingham, the series takes its name from a real-life gang in the city who had razor blades hidden in the peaks of their flat caps.

Mr Glazebrook said producers were looking for a new "compelling screen presence", although previous acting experience was not required.

"I don't want people to think, 'I'm not trained'. Sometimes for actors of this age people have just got it."

Manchester United's poor run of form was brought to a convincing end as Adnan Januzaj inspired them to victory over Swansea.

The 18-year-old did not start last weekend's FA Cup third-round defeat by the Welsh side but proved his undoubted value by helping to create second-half goals for Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck.

His contribution returned David Moyes's side to winning ways as they avoided the ignominy of losing four consecutive games for the first time since 1961.

It also ended a wretched run of four defeats in their past six home games as United finished a forgettable week on a positive note.

Following their defeat by Michael Laudrup's side last Sunday, United lost in the Capital One Cup at Sunderland, with Moyes charged by the Football Association for comments about the referee after that loss.

But this was a much improved performance by the Scot's team, who moved back to within four points of fourth-placed Everton.

They are still nine points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, whom they face a week on Sunday, but with Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa also impressing in the absence of the injured Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, there was at least a sense that a Champions League spot is well within their grasp.

The hosts were helped by the performance of Nemanja Vidic, who kept Wilfried Bony, scorer of Swansea's winner last week, quiet.

The Swans were far better in possession than United in that game, and the pattern of the first half was similar this time as the home side created the better chances but were less accomplished on the ball.

Januzaj, rested last weekend, was United's most creative force, playing in the number 10 position behind Welbeck, and delivered several testing set-pieces before cracking a shot against the bar from one.

Vidic, Darren Fletcher and Patrice Evra then all went close and Welbeck should have put the hosts ahead when a smart interchange between Valencia and Rafael led to the Brazilian finding the unmarked England striker, who curled a shot wide of the far post from 10 yards.

Although the visitors caused problems, with Jonjo Shelvey dragging a shot wide, they did not - unlike last week - have an early goal to defend.

Januzaj emerged from the break to feature down the left and the Belgium-born forward immediately teased Angel Rangel before whipping another superb cross in, with Valencia firing in from Kagawa's header back across goal.

Twelve minutes later, Januzaj was at it again, this time on the right. His curling centre was cleared as far as Evra, whose shot was flicked in by Welbeck for his ninth goal of the season and sixth in as many league games.

With a two-goal cushion, United's confidence was restored and Chris Smalling missed a golden chance when he somehow volleyed over from five yards following Kagawa's cross.

Kagawa was then wasteful when, after a swift break, he dribbled around goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel but saw his effort cleared off the line by Leon Britton.

The visitors caused a few nervous moments thereafter but United held firm and will approach their next game against Chelsea, in which Rooney could return, with renewed confidence.

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup:

"I think we did well, we controlled the first half knowing that Manchester United would be a bit anxious after three consecutive losses but giving away the goal after just 90 seconds of the second half was just what we didn't want.

"They have very good players and they got on top of the game and when they got the second goal they got real belief.

"We lost the game but now we have to get some players back and win the next game. I think we are down to just 13 fit players now but we will see what happens in the week."

Hundreds attend Mark Duggan vigil

Mark Duggan death: Hundreds gather for Tottenham vigil

Family members of Mark Duggan, including his mother Pamela (left), release doves during a vigil for him outside Tottenham Police Station Mark Duggan's mother, Pamela Duggan, thanked everyone for attending peacefully before doves were released

Up to 500 people have attended a vigil for Mark Duggan outside Tottenham police station.

On Wednesday, a jury concluded the 29-year-old was lawfully killed when he was shot dead by police in August 2011, sparking riots in many English cities.

The gathering was used to protest against deaths in police custody. His family had called for it to be a peaceful event to remember Mr Duggan.

A minute's silence ended with chants of "No justice, no peace".

Mark Duggan's aunt, Carole Duggan, who said before the event she wanted "no more violence", addressed the crowd from the steps of the police station.

She said: "We have to remember Mark is not the first person to die at the hands of the police.

"There's been thousands more."

Mr Duggan's mother Pamela also spoke, thanking everyone for attending peacefully outside the police station.

She said: "We want justice for my son.

"Mark was a young boy. He wasn't a gangster. Gangsters have everything. Mark didn't have nothing.

"Mark had his children, his life."

The family of Sean Rigg, a black musician with schizophrenia who died at Brixton police station in 2008, also attended the gathering in north London.

Trade unionists were also there with banners in what the BBC's Nick Beake called "a broader anti-police protest".

Later, members of the Duggan family released white doves into the sky.

Ahead of the vigil, the police station's shutters came down with a message on the front saying that the station was closed.

The first two people to arrive, bringing chairs with them, were Islington pensioner Anne Johnson, 80, a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain, and 73-year-old Martha Osamor.

Ms Osamor, who works at Haringey Law Centre, in Tottenham, said: "I knew Mark Duggan when he was a little boy. So little has changed over the years.

"Here am I picketing outside Tottenham police station yet again."

As Tom Symonds reports, up to 500 people gathered outside Tottenham Police station

Earlier, police said they had been aware of a "small number" of people intending to provoke disorder, despite the family's pleas for a peaceful vigil.

The Metropolitan Police said it had a "policing operation" in place across London in case there had been any problems.

Tottenham Hotspur's game against Crystal Palace at nearby White Hart Lane kicked off an hour after people started gathering for the vigil.

Met Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe had already praised the family's "dignified" response to the inquest.

Birmingham event

Prime Minster David Cameron welcomed Ms Duggan's message of restraint, saying: "I very much respect Mark Duggan's aunt for saying 'pursue the case in the courts and not the street'."

In Birmingham, about 30 people also gathered as part of a similar event.

Organiser Geoff Dexter said it had been arranged for those who could not travel to London, to allow them to show support for Mark Duggan's family.

People gathered outside Tottenham police station after Mark Duggan was shot in 2011, with anger growing and leading to the worst rioting in a generation.

The jury at his inquest concluded after three months that he was in possession of a gun - although not holding one - and therefore posed an imminent threat to police when he was killed.
