Wrexham hospital patient death investigated by police
Further tests are to be carried out to establish the cause of death Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a patient at a north Wales hospital.
Alan Walker, 81, of Leeswood, near Mold, died at Wrexham Maelor Hospital last month. A cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
North Wales Police said there had been no arrests but staff at the hospital were "assisting" with inquiries.
The health board said a small number of staff had been assigned to other duties while the investigation was ongoing.
An anonymous hospital worker told BBC Wales the death was a "reflection of poor supervision, poor management and poor leadership", and that the patient had not been expected to die.
"The hospital should be shut down," the worker added.
A North Wales Police spokesman said no one had been arrested but "staff members are assisting officers in piecing together the sequence of events leading up to the death".
"A post mortem examination has been carried out. The cause of death has been deferred pending further toxicology tests," he added.
Professor Matthew Makin, executive medical director at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board confirmed police were investigating an incident that happened at Wrexham Maelor Hospital on 22 January.
"I cannot make any further comment on this incident while the investigation is underway, but I would like to give my reassurance that the safety of our patients is our top priority," he said.
"A small number of staff have been assigned to other duties while the investigation is ongoing."
A coroner's investigation into Mr Walker's death has been adjourned to a date in June.
