Mother charged with murder of baby

Oldham baby death: Mother charged with murder

Manchester Children's Hospital Thomas Gacek died at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital on 27 January

The mother of a seven-week-old baby who died from head injuries has been charged with his murder.

Katarzyna Gacek, 24, of Hillside Avenue, Oldham is accused of killing her son Thomas Gacek at their home on 26 January.

The boy was taken to hospital but died a day later.

Two men, Darren Butterfield, 35, of Ross Avenue, Chadderton, and Dawid Mokrzanowski, 26, of Hillside Avenue, have been charged with child neglect.

Ms Gacek, who is also charged with child neglect in connection with the infant's death, will appear at Oldham Magistrates' Court along with the two men on Monday.

Police officers were called to the Royal Oldham Hospital at 02:10 GMT last Sunday after reports that a baby had been admitted with severe head injuries.

Thomas was later transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

A post-mortem examination revealed he died from head wounds "consistent with a non-accidental injury", according to Greater Manchester Police.

The boy's family said in a statement: "As a family, we are all truly devastated and deeply shocked by the tragedy we have all suffered and the loss of our little baby boy.

"We are a private family and, as such, we would ask the media allow us time to grieve in peace and come to terms with this tragic situation we have all found ourselves in.

"We are aware that there are numerous stories in circulation at present. However, we would ask that only official police statements given by Greater Manchester Police are taken as factually correct."
