A school teacher in Southern California has been arrested on sexual abuse charges after a former student aired allegations in a YouTube video.

A $5m (£3m) arrest warrant had been issued for Andrea Cardosa, 40, after she was charged with five counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child.

The arrest came after the former student posted a video showing her confronting Ms Cardosa in a phone call.

Ms Cardosa is due to appear in court later this week.

Neither she nor her lawyer has so far commented.

Prosecutors said a sheriff's team arrested Ms Cardosa in the city of Perris on Monday evening, just hours after the arrest warrant had been issued.

The video that sparked the case was viewed nearly one million times just days after it was posted on YouTube.

The alleged victim, now 28, said the assaults began when she was 12 and Ms Cardosa was her basketball coach.

A second alleged victim came forward later.

Riverside County District Attorney's office said that as well as the aggravated sexual assault charges, Ms Cardosa faces another 11 other counts of abuse.

The video was also sent to the Alhambra Unified School District where Ms Cardosa was working as an assistant principal.

The superintendent immediately referred the case to police and Ms Cardosa resigned the same day.

School officials said Ms Cardosa was hired in October after she passed criminal background checks and came with a clean record from her previous employer.
