Thousands of people are expected to line the streets of Preston later for the civic funeral of Sir Tom Finney.

The service takes place at 13:00 GMT at Preston Minster for the former England and Preston North End winger, who died on 14 February at the age of 91.

His cortege accompanied by a mounted police escort will be met by military veterans marking his wartime service.

Fans have been asked to watch the service on big screens at the club's Deepdale ground.

The service will be attended by some 600 invited guests at the minster while fans watching the funeral at the ground had to obtain free tickets from the club.

Former teammate Tommy Docherty and Sir Tom's friend the ex-Blackpool player Jimmy Armfield will be paying tributes to the Preston-born legend, who spent his entire career at his hometown club.

The cortege starts 12:15 at Deepdale, moving along Sir Tom Finney Way and Deepdale Road, Ringway, Tithebarn Street, Lord Street and Lancaster Road.

At Tithebarn Street the cortege will be met by mounted police and will be greeted outside Preston Guildhall by representatives from the Preston and District Veterans Association, before its scheduled arrival at Preston Minster at about 12:50.

Civic representatives will join the cortege outside Preston Town Hall.

Preston City Council said Church Street would be closed to traffic and pedestrians during the service.
