CES 2014: 'Iron Man' reality glasses put to test

5 January 2014 Last updated at 19:50 GMT

Silicon Valley start-up Meta is showing off a prototype of its 3D augmented reality glasses.

With a price tag of $3,000 (£1,827) the Meta Pro allows users to interact with and manipulate a virtual environment in 3D space.

The firm's founder and chief executive, Meron Gribetz, said the glasses represented the next wave of more natural computing. He will put them on show at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

The BBC's North America technology correspondent Richard Taylor was given an early demo ahead of the event.

Triple star system clue to gravity

Triple star system 'can reveal secrets of gravity'

Millisecond pulsar, left foreground, is orbited by a hot white dwarf star, centre, both of which are orbited by another, more-distant and cooler white dwarf, top right. The pulsar (L) is orbited by a hot white dwarf star (C) both of which are orbited by a cooler, distant white dwarf (R)

Astronomers have discovered a unique triple star system which could reveal the true nature of gravity.

They found a pulsar with two white dwarfs all packed in a space smaller than Earth's orbit of the Sun.

The trio's unusually close orbits allow precise measurements of gravity and could resolve difficulties with Einstein's theories.

The results appear in Nature journal and will be presented at the 223rd American Astronomical Society meeting.

"This triple system gives us a natural cosmic laboratory far better than anything found before for learning exactly how such three-body systems work and potentially for detecting problems with general relativity that physicists expect to see under extreme conditions," said Scott Ransom of the US National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in Charlottesville, VA.

"This is a fascinating system in many ways, including what must have been a completely crazy formation history, and we have much work to do to fully understand it."

Pulsars emit lighthouse-like beams of radio waves that rapidly sweep through space as the stars spin on their axes.

They are formed after a supernova collapses a burnt-out star to a dense, highly magnetised ball of neutrons.

Using the Green Bank Telescope, the astronomers discovered a pulsar 4,200 light-years from Earth, spinning nearly 366 times per second.

Such rapidly-spinning bodies are called millisecond pulsars - and are used by astronomers as precision tools for studying gravitational effects and other phenomena.

Subsequent observations showed the pulsar is in a close orbit with a white dwarf star, and that pair is in orbit with another, more-distant white dwarf.

Green Bank radio telescope, West Virginia Green Bank is 100m wide - the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope

Three-body systems are keenly studied because they allow competing theories of gravity to be tested.

But until now the only known triple system containing a millisecond pulsar was one with a planet as the outer companion, causing only weak gravitational interactions.

"This is the first millisecond pulsar found in such a system, and we immediately recognised that it provides us a tremendous opportunity to study the effects and nature of gravity," Prof Ransom said.

"The gravitational perturbations imposed on each member of this system by the others are incredibly pure and strong."

By precisely timing the arrival of the pulses, the scientists were able to calculate the geometry of the system and the masses of the stars.

The pulsar's inner white-dwarf companion has an orbital period of less than two days, while the outer dwarf has a period of almost a year.

The system gives the scientists the best opportunity yet to look for violations of the equivalence principle described by Einstein - which states that the effect of gravity on a body does not depend on the nature or internal structure of that body.

This was famously illustrated by Galileo's dropping of two balls of different weights from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Apollo 15 Commander Dave Scott's dropping of a hammer and a falcon feather while standing on the Moon in 1971.

Rather than drifting to the ground, the feather plummeted, falling as fast as the hammer. Without air resistance to slow the feather, both objects hit the lunar dust at the same time.

"While Einstein's theory of general relativity has so far been confirmed by every experiment, it is not compatible with quantum theory," said Prof Ransom.

"Because of that, physicists expect that it will break down under extreme conditions."

High-precision timing of the pulsar's "lighthouse" flashes will let astronomers hunt for deviations in the equivalence principle at a sensitivity several orders of magnitude greater than ever before, said astronomer Prof Ingrid Stairs of the University of British Columbia.

"Finding a deviation would indicate a breakdown of general relativity and point us toward a new, correct theory of gravity," she said.

The 223rd AAS meeting runs from 5-9 January in Washington DC.

Goulding album trickles to top

Goulding tops chart more than a year after album release

Ellie Goulding Goulding has both an album and single in the top five

Ellie Goulding's second album has reached the top of the UK chart for the first time, more than a year after it was released.

Halcyon, which came out in October 2012, features five top 40 singles, including her debut number one Burn.

US rapper Pitbull scored the first number one single of the year with Timber, featuring Kesha.

Pop star Kesha revealed this week that she had entered a rehab facility for an eating disorder.

The 26-year-old said she wanted to "learn to love myself again, exactly as I am".

The Official Charts Company said Timber has sold surprisingly well in a week that is traditionally slow, shifting 139,000 copies.

Pharrell William's Happy slipped one place to number two, while Avicii's Hey Brother and Jason Derulo's Trumpets stayed at three and four.

Goulding's Children in Need single How Long Will I Love You climbed to number five.

Last week's number one album, Robbie Williams's Swings Both Ways, fell to number four, while Gary Barlow's Since I Saw You Last remained at two, followed by Beyonce's eponymous album at three.

The top five was completed by John Newman's Tribute, which rose from number 11.

Blackadder star and Gove in WW1 row

Blackadder star Sir Tony Robinson in Michael Gove WW1 row

Blackadder Goes Forth Sir Tony Robinson (centre) played Baldrick in Blackadder Goes Forth

A row has erupted between Sir Tony Robinson and Michael Gove after the education secretary claimed "left-wing academics" were using Blackadder "to feed myths" about World War One.

Sir Tony, who played Baldrick in the BBC series, said Mr Gove was essentially "slagging off teachers".

But Mr Gove said Sir Tony - a left wing activist - was "wrong" and he had not been attacking teachers, just "myths".

The row comes ahead of centenary commemorations for the outbreak of WW1.

The final series of Blackadder - set in the trenches of WW1 - depicts Britain's military leaders as cowards and buffoons, in common with earlier fictional accounts of the conflict such as the 1960s musical farce Oh, What a Lovely War!

'Catastrophic mistakes'

Mr Gove told the Daily Mail on Thursday, that people's understanding of the war had been overlaid by "misrepresentations" which at worst reflected "an unhappy compulsion on the part of some to denigrate virtues such as patriotism, honour and courage".

"The war was, of course, an unspeakable tragedy, which robbed this nation of our bravest and best," wrote Mr Gove.

"But even as we recall that loss and commemorate the bravery of those who fought, it's important that we don't succumb to some of the myths which have grown up about the conflict."

He added: "The conflict has, for many, been seen through the fictional prism of dramas such as Oh, What a Lovely War!, The Monocled Mutineer and Blackadder, as a misbegotten shambles - a series of catastrophic mistakes perpetrated by an out-of-touch elite.

"Even to this day there are left-wing academics all too happy to feed those myths."

Some scenes in Oh, What a Lovely War! were based on historian and Conservative politician Alan Clark's revisionist history of WW1, The Donkeys, which is credited with starting the trend for unflattering portrayals of WW1 top brass.

Alan Bleasdale's The Monocled Mutineer was also in Mr Gove's crosshairs Alan Bleasdale's The Monocled Mutineer was also in Mr Gove's crosshairs

Speaking to Sky News on Sunday, Sir Tony, a former member of Labour's ruling National Executive Committee, said: "I think Mr Gove has just made a very silly mistake; it's not that Blackadder teaches children the First World War.

"When imaginative teachers bring it in, it's simply another teaching tool; they probably take them over to Flanders to have a look at the sights out there, have them marching around the playground, read the poems of Wilfred Owen to them. And one of the things that they'll do is show them Blackadder.

"And I think to make this mistake, to categorise teachers who would introduce something like Blackadder as left-wing and introducing left-wing propaganda is very, very unhelpful. And I think it's particularly unhelpful and irresponsible for a minister in charge of education."

The actor and Labour activist said it was "just another example of slagging off teachers," adding: "I don't think that's professional or appropriate."

But a spokesman for Michael Gove hit back at his comments.

"Tony Robinson is wrong. Michael wasn't attacking teachers, he was attacking the myths perpetuated in Blackadder and elsewhere," said the spokesman.

"Michael thinks it is important not to denigrate the patriotism, honour and courage demonstrated by ordinary British soldiers in the First World War."

Paxman comments

Earlier, shadow education secretary and TV historian Tristram Hunt also criticised Mr Gove's "crass" comments.

In an article in The Observer, the Labour MP wrote: "The reality is clear: the government is using what should be a moment for national reflection and respectful debate to rewrite the historical record and sow political division."

In October, BBC Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman, who has written a book to tie in with the centenary of the start of WW1, criticised schools for relying on episodes of Blackadder Goes Forth to teach pupils about the conflict.

The following month, Conservative defence minister Andrew Murrison, a former Royal Navy surgeon, said: "We risk disconnection from a defining event of our time and an opportunity, perhaps, to balance the Oh! What A Lovely War/Blackadder take on history, that has sadly been in the ascendant for the past 50 years."

Caerphilly budget plan under fire

Plaid Cymru criticises Caerphilly's budget savings plan

Caerphilly council offices The council aims to save £28.13m over the next three years

Opposition councillors in Caerphilly have criticised the Labour-led administration's priorities as it aims to save £14.53m next year.

Plaid Cymru councillors have hit out at proposals to charge for dealing with rats, garden waste collection, and hiking sports club pitch hire charges.

The proposals are part of the council's aim to save £28.13m by April 2017.

One of the council's deputy leaders has challenged the Plaid group to put forward its own budget proposals.

Plaid Cymru's regeneration spokesperson Rob Gough said his group questioned the priorities drawn up by council officers.

He added: "Is proposing a £20 fee when people call the council because they have rats in their home or a charge for the collection of garden waste the correct priorities, as well as £25 for all replacement waste bins, even if they are stolen?

"It is also proposed to stop cleaning parks at weekends which could leave empty bottles and cans and broken glass left strewn around on the busiest days for families and children."

'Alternative proposals'

Colin Mann, leader of the Plaid group, said: "These swingeing cuts will hit people in Caerphilly County Borough Council hard and we question some of the priorities drawn up on the environment budget."

The council's deputy leader, Keith Reynolds said: "It's a bit rich of Rob Gough to talk about wheelie bin replacement charges when the previous Plaid Cymru administration introduced the charges in the first place.

"I would like Colin Mann to put forward alternative proposals to make the £14.53m savings in the next financial next year."

Mr Reynolds added that all the proposals had been considered by the council's scrutiny committees.

"It is possible those committees will look at the council's budget plans again before they are considered by the cabinet," he said.

"Whatever happens we have told staff that compulsory redundancies are a last resort."

Council leaders have admitted they face financial challenges but that the authority is in a good position compared to some other councils.

Residents have been consulted on the proposals, with a deadline just before Christmas.

It is expected that the budget will be set by Caerphilly Council by the end of February.
