Arrests after University of Birmingham protest

Thirteen people have been arrested after protesters clashed with police and university staff during a demonstration.

They had arrived at the University of Birmingham to campaign against rising tuition fees and low staff wages.

But a spokeswoman for the university said it was forced to call the police after smoke bombs and fireworks were thrown, staff injured and property damaged.

Some demonstrators claimed they had been "kettled" by police, something the West Midlands force strongly denied.

The Guild of Students at the university distanced itself from the actions of some protesters, which it described as "extremely disappointing".
