Storms return to batter UK
Gales of more than 100mph have returned to the UK - days after severe weather left 43,000 people without power and 1,200 homes in England flooded.
Met Office yellow warnings - meaning "be aware" - for wind and rain are in place for parts of the UK until 21:00 GMT. More than 75 flood warnings are in place in England, Wales and Scotland.
The Met Office recorded a 109mph gust in Aberdaron, Gwynedd, overnight.
Road closures have been reported around the UK because of uprooted trees.
BBC Weather's Jay Wynne said things that after some relatively calmer weather in the past 48 hours, a new Atlantic storm was hitting the UK.
He said that, although it was a notch down on earlier in the week, a spell of pretty stormy weather was affecting large swathes of the country
There was the potential for disruption, especially where ground was already saturated and in areas where high winds were combined with heavy rainfall.
High-sided vehicles could well be at risk over the Pennines with gusts of 70mph expected on Friday, he added.
'High winds'More travel disruption is expected with Gatwick Airport saying it has "additional teams of engineers, electrical staff and volunteers at the airport to minimise the risk of disruption from potential further flooding".
In the Republic of Ireland, Dublin Airport had to divert six planes overnight because of "high winds gusting across both runways".
The Environment Agency is warning of ongoing disruption on the River Medway and the Kentish Stour around Ashford and Canterbury.
Flooding across the Somerset Levels, River Severn, River Thames and River Ouse in Cambridgeshire and rivers across Essex is expected, the agency said.
Meanwhile:
- There will be no Gatwick Express service, between London and Gatwick, on Friday. Gatwick warns that replacement bus services and diversions could add up to two hours to journey times to the airport
- Southeastern train services are not expected to operate until about 12:00 GMT on Friday because of strong winds
- Network Rail says routes will need to be checked in the morning for disruption caused by fallen trees
- About 7,500 UK homes are still without power - engineers say some homes may not be reconnected until the end of the week
